While doing a presentation over the summer I showed this video.
While quite humorous in itself, the point I was trying to get across is that sometimes people find themselves stuck and for whatever reason are too afraid to take their own step towards solving it. They expect someone will come and help them. Like the individuals in the video, frequent comments include “I don’t have time for this” or “I don'’t believe this!”
As leaders we may fall into the same situation at times. Leadership can be a very isolated position. We’re supposed to have all the answers as well, right? Isn’t asking for help a sign of weakness?
That’s why as we begin a new school year, and things are relatively quiet in our schools, I want to strongly suggest that we all need to have a trusted colleague that we can talk to over the phone or a coffee. Sometimes we may already know the answer, but just need a bit of clarification or verification of our thinking. Sometimes we may have to admit we are in effect “stuck” in our thinking and need to look at things from a different perspective.
Leadership is sometimes a lonely position, but we don't have to go it alone. Take that step.
