"Don't you dare"... My sister quickly whispered these words into my mom's ear since she knew what was about to happen.
It was the first month of my first year as a young principal and my protective loving mother was in the checkout line of the local Walmart when what was likely a mother of a student made a comment about the new principal and his age and experience.
It's funny to look back on those moments now four years later however the public life of the principal-ship is exactly that, PUBLIC.
Recently a new principal friend of mine was introduced to this in an all to real way when at dinner with his family he and his wife ordered a couple beers after a long week only to be stared at by students and family a few tables down. Not thinking much of it at the time the phone calls on Monday from his PTO president about his "apparent binging" brought him into the sore reality of public life.
I always quickly find myself saying it's not fair but in all reality it really doesn't matter. It is what it is.
I am asked to carry myself differently and that's okay, it's why I am dedicated to education, it's not about me.
With that said, I have truly recognized that importance of what I call, "getting the heck out"!
Separating myself, my wife, and my kids from the constant questioning of how my people will we run into and packing up and just spending time away from the constant hustle and bustle of the job.
Myself and the other administrative team members also make it a point to spend time with each other outside of the district setting and community. Every month we do what we can to kick back and just laugh about our experiences. Besides, that's what it's all about relationships and reflection.
Take time to relax. You're no good to anybody, especially the ones you love, if you can't.
