Okay, so I'm kind of an idea guy. Believe it or not that's not always the most popular thing. But it's just who I am. I've been enjoying summer so far, and just today we've begun telling people that our family is expecting an addition. Baby Bruns will arrive in December. So there I've told my loyal blog reader as well! Anyways a few months back I was introduced to Khan Academy, but really have had the opportunity to explore much of it. Now it's summer and I can let my brain roam a bit. Basically I'm going to post two videos about Khan Academy. I could write in depth about the whole organization, but if you watch the videos Salman Khan does a nice job of explaining himself and his goals. What I can say is that I find it interesting that he has such a simple beginning, and his "light bulb" moment is pretty cute in its own way. What I like most is that first everything Khan Academy offers is free, and you can learn a great deal. Salman Khan is excited about learning and that comes through in his talks. I enjoyed Physics and Chemistry in high school, but over the years of being a man who focused on words and great literature some of the concepts have drained from my brain. So I watched a bit on Stoichiometry today, and was surprised to find that it still makes sense. I have a few Physics questions I'll have to check out as well. Most of all though, I believe I may have found my own savior. I have one final class to take before I get more in depth into my research and dissertation writing: Advanced Statistics. Statistics for me was hard! I felt like I was alone with no help, despite having a teacher. I'm not always the best at asking questions though so I relate to those students who sometimes struggle alone. I'm almost done with Hollowing Out the Middle. I believe I have about 10 pages left, but I couldn't finish last night. I have several thoughts, and I'll share here, but I won't have the opportunity to talk with the professors who will be visiting Scotland as I'll be at a conference when they're in town. Maybe I'll write them a letter. Otherwise I also read Shooting Stars, a book about Lebron James and the friends he learned basketball with growing up. A great read written by Pulitzer prize-winner Buzz Bissinger. Anyways, the first video is a snippet, and the second video is a 20 minute Ted Talk. If you've read my blog you know I enjoy the Ted Talks....I can also say I stuck to the promise of giving up on the chocolate milk. I have had one chocolate milk at lunch since I wrote that post months ago, and that was because 2% was out. I can't stomach skim milk...makes me think of tuna casserole. Enjoy.
