Or give us all a W....I like to win. We like to Win...everyone likes to win. But middle school and high school sports isn't just about winning. That's not a fancy adage, or maxim, and it's certainly not trite. It's the truth. Student athletes have a great deal to learn being a part of a team. A part of a team. They learn about cooperation, respect for one another, respect for a coach, the thrills of competition, the disappointment of loss, the disappointment that we are not all blessed with the same skills, to learn humility when blessed with more skills, stress and adversity, and they learn a great deal from their parents who model either excellent or less than excellent behaviors for their children in relation to sports. Every year we touch on this subject at our fall sports meeting. It's a friendly reminder that we are from Scotland, a place where people have respect for other people. In the heat of sports sometimes we forget ourselves and suddenly a mistake is made we can't take back. I have not seen that happen from a Scotland fan, and hope to never see it. However, we had several disruptive fans at our middle school football jamboree this past weekend. Our administrator in charge was busy ensuring that things went smoothly, and I was on a firing range somewhere a couple of states over for the Army. So we had nobody with authority to kindly remind our unruly spectators that we expect more from fans in our neighborhood. Thank you to the fan who made an effort at talking with our guests, but it does not sound like you were well-received. I apologize for that, and I hope we can remedy future altercations in a more civil manner.
Homecoming Week went extremely well, and our students had the opportunity to display their school pride in a positive manner. Congratulations to Kyle Gall and Mariah Roth our 2011 Homecoming royalty. I'm looking forward to another excellent week in education.
Where was I 10 years ago? I was driving to my student-teaching gig in Stickney, South Dakota. I remember a single engine Cessna had flown into a bank some months earlier and didn't think much of the radio chatter on the way to school. Until I got to school. Then the world changed. I found myself on a plane 4 days later for some military training. I've never been on a flight so devoid of people. And of course the next 10 years have been what's "happened since" for our country and for us. Thanks to all those who serve or who have served. I know why you do it, it's the same reason I do it......but that's a different note.
Game of Thrones is definitely addictive. I just need one more evening at home to finish the third one. And I already checked out number four because I was concerned that someone else might suddenly decide to check it out. I don't want to ruin the "end" for you but the Starks are in a world of trouble and need all the help they can get in number four.
