Destination Imagination

Great news for Groton DIers, we had several Destination Imagination teams that placed at the regional level, and will be traveling to the State DI tournament, in Pierre, on April 2.  A couple of the teams were involved several Junior High and Senior High kids.  Great job and good luck!!!

State Mathcounts

Having been awarded second place in the Northeastern South Dakota Chapter MathCounts Competition at Northern State University in Aberdeen on February 12, four Groton Area Junior High School MathCounts students participated in the South Dakota State MathCounts Competition in Pierre on March 11-12.  Team members, all eighth graders, were Gabe Dohman, Jacob Milbrandt, Luke Smith, and Lucas Sternhagen.  The team earned a sixth place standing in the competition--only 4.5 points behind third place.

 George S. Mickelson Middle School in Brookings won the team competition.  The top four individuals (two from Brookings, one from Sioux Falls, and one from Rapid City) proceed to the National MathCounts Competition in Washington, D.C. in May.

 

Show Choir Strutt'n Their Stuff

CONGRATULATIONS to the show choir for placing FIRST in their class Saturday at the Mitchell Show Choir Competition.  They also qualified for the final competition that evening and recieved 4th Runner-Up against two Omaha Nebraska schools, Marshall Minnesota and Vermillion.  GOOD JOB!!!!

A congratulations to Stephanie Fey who was selected to the 2^nd team NEC All Conference girls basketball team and to Tiffany Lerew was selected to the 3^rd team.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The legislative session is winding down and cuts to K12 education are inevitable.  Think of the very thing your child enjoys most about school… arts, athletics, debate, cheerleading, golf, advanced courses, reading programs.  All of those things – and more – could look drastically different in the future, or worse yet, be cut entirely.  It is important for parents to know that each and every student will be directly impacted by a significant decrease in education funding.

I urge you to contact our lawmakers to voice your concern.  It’s easy. 

1.  Simply copy and paste the following address into your email browser:     http://legis.state.sd.us/email/LegislatorEmail.aspx

2.  Choose a senator or representative from the drop-down box.

3.  In the subject line, write: We are taxpayers and we expect K-12 education to be funded without a decrease.

4.  In the body of the email, if you wish, get more detailed by letting lawmakers know which programs benefit your child and how a cut to education might impact your family.

5.  Make phone calls.  House - 605.773.3851 // Senate - 605.773.3821  // Governor - 605.773.3212

SUGGESTED PHONE MESSAGE:

                        Hi.  This is ____(NAME)___ - a __(TOWN)__ taxpayer and the parent of a __(GRADE)__ student.  I expect you to fund K12 education without a decrease. 

                        Our family is depending on you.  Please don’t let us down.

6.  When you've finished the steps above, forward this email to friends and family and encourage them to follow the same simple steps.

The legislative session ends Friday, March 11th. 

I am also attaching some information for you to look at as well.

Thank you, in advance, for being your child's strongest advocate. The quote that keeps going around that hits home for me is, “today’s elementary students won’t have the same opportunities that our seniors had.”  Being a father of three young children I take offense to this.
