Monday is the first day of another school year. During one of our pre-serivice days a speaker told our teachers that it is often the case in which it takes 80% of a teachers energy to "motivate a student to learn." However, he went on to say that once the student is motivated the effort will pay off on being able to produce 20% effort to "teach the student." I can relate to this analogy. Much effort has been spend getting ready for a new school year. My philosophy is that if I work upfront and ensure a solid start to the school year it will go well and teachers and students will be able to work at high levels.
Someone asked me what I was most excited about to start this school year. My response is twofold; 1. I am excited to work with the new staff that is now part of the HDHS community. I relish in the opportunity to work with these people as well as get new ideas and energy from them. Furthermore, I take very seriously the responsibility to get first time teachers off to a good start. 2. I am excited with the potential of or advisory program this year. I know the advisory program has been well-thought-out and planned. I am excited about advisory because I think it will positively impact both of our building goals (reading comprehension and homework completion) and increase student achievement. You can view the day-by-day advisory map for the school year here Download 2009-10 Advisory Map.
Through this blog I hope you can follow the ups and downs of a school year as I reflect on the past week and look ahead and give insight to the upcoming week. If you have topics that you would like me to consider blogging about please let me know. Furthermore, if you need help in figureing out how to reply to my posts please call me at the high school at 456-4893. I'm truly looking forward to the new school year and opportunity to make the high school years of our H-D students some of the best and most meaningful in their lives. Go Bulldogs!
