I was disappointed this past week with a couple of things. First, there were multiple student suspensions during the week. Almost all of these suspensions resulted from students "telling teachers off" and blatantly being disrespectful to authority figures. I don't know why all of these suspensions came to be this week since the beginning of the school year was very calm. Although there are times when students will not agree with staff, it is school, and respect must be a fundamental understanding. After the disappointment of having to suspend students the second disappointment came from parents and guardians who seemed surprised that a student would be suspended for telling a teacher to F*** off. This disappointed me on so many levels. How do we expect to educate any student without some basic respect? If students can swear at teachers, who will want to teach at Hampton-Dumont High School? What are we teaching students if we do not firmly address disrespect to authority figures? Whose fault is it going to be a young adult gets fired for telling their boss off someday? This disappointment reconfirmed my belief in that parents and teachers must be on the same page to give kids the best education and when they are not parents will prevail every time right or wrong.
This week is homecoming week at HDHS. For many students it is the most enjoyable week of the entire school year. I will apologize in advance for any tee-peeing that will happen around the community. However, I will also guarantee that it will be picked up on Friday during service-learning time. The student council came up with some very creative theme days this week including color day, fake an injury day, fairy tale day, super hero day, and spirit day on Friday. Students will also engage in service-learning projects on Friday. This is a great day in which students can help the community and learn the skill of doing for others. To observe the homecoming week agenda in detail and service learning projects please see the attachments. Let's also not forget that homecoming week is truly a chance to invite the alumni back to their alma mater. I hope many come back and cheer on the bulldogs to a victory! Go Bulldogs!
