At a recent Iowa Core Curriculum meeting a team of H-D teachers and I heard someone make the following comment about schools today. She said, "When parents come into our schools they should feel uncomfortable because what they see is so different from the schools that they were educated in. The problem is that our school today our teaching to our memories rather than the needs of students today."
As I reflect on this comment, I think about various programs and things in our district that parents do question or struggle with. The new math curriculum, co-teaching, graphing calculators, online curriculum (such as PLATO, Iowa Learning Online, or e2020), alternative school programing, the philosophy that special education students can fail classes even though they receive extra help around their goal area, iPods, students using laptops in classes, dual credit classes in high school, among other things. What is different about our schools and education today from when you went to school? Are you uncomfortable when you see the different programs and things going on at HDHS?
Fall parent/teacher conferences are scheduled for this upcoming week. There will be a 1 hour early out on both Tuesday and Thursday to allow for 3:00-7:00 conferences both nights. Conferences will be in teachers rooms this year. This allows for more private and personal conversations. Besides getting your child's academic report card you will also get a report on your child's MAP tests scores. The below documents present information about what MAP scores mean.
