Last week 4 students from the Eldora Training School were invited to Hampton-Dumont High School to address the student body on the topic of choices. These students specifically talked about not having many of the freedoms typical high school students have because of the choices they had made in the past. Though an eye opening experience for students and staff, the real message I hoped people would hear was that of choices around prom. I am thrilled that again this year we did not have any major accidents or incidents related to prom and the students really seemed to enjoy the experience. It would only take one serious accident to ruin prom all-together. Thank you to all the junior class parents and dance chaperones for all their work in planning and carrying out another successful prom event!
The chess match continues with staffing for the 2010-11 school year. Jerry Shafrath has recently decided to take on the full time role of physical education teacher next year. The district also successfully hired a replacement for special education director Jen Schmitt last week. Jenn Peter, who currently resides in Boone, will serve the district as the special education director next year. This week we are interviewing for 9-12 special education teaching positions. Future positions to hire include at-risk, technology integrationist, and an associate.
Attached is an article about reading and teaching. It intrigues me as I just received our ITED scores back in the mail today. Our scores overall are nothing to brag about. More information to come on our high school ITED's in the future. However, this article provides some very thoughtful insight to why students do need to know and be able to read, write, complete basic math, and possess soft skills to prosper in the 21st century.
