Much of my attention has recently been focused on 4 months from now when we get laptops in the hands of students and kick off a new school year. Below are my most recent thoughts and documentation related to the 1:1 laptop initiative. I am actively seeking feedback and thoughts...
Beliefs
The Hampton-Dumont High School Technology Plan believes in the following research
based philosophies.
• Students learn better in all subject areas when technology is integral to
instructioAn. Technology will not be an event but rather an infused part of the general education curriclum.
• Students currently interact with technology and media differently that any
other age group.
• Educators that have a rich technology background and skill set are more
likely to successfully integrate technology into instruction.
• Technology provides 24/7 learning opportunities for our students.
Professional Development for Teachers
The Hampton-Dumont Schools will utilize peer coaching, professional
learning communities and formal training for professional development
related to technology. The following will be utilized.
• Formal training sessions with vendors and staff experts.
• School Fusion Classroom formal training
• Apple training with staff - Spring and Fall 2010
• Follow up sessions will be conducted in house on a regular basis.
• Professional Learning Communities focusing on technology have been
formed. They are actively pursuing content delivery and integration.
• Staff will be encouraged to seek out other resources such as conferences
and course work.
• A technology integrationist will be available to work with teachers and students to integrate technology into teaching and learning.
• Weekly technology session – Staff has opportunity for short training
sessions on a variety of topics.
• A building level technology team will guide purchases, training, and troubleshooting related to technology.
1 to 1 Initiative Rationale
Students today are different than they were even a decade ago. They are leading lives
entrenched in technology at an ever increasing rate. Today's students are not engaged by
traditional teaching methods. They want to be active participants in their learning, not
just passively receiving information. They need an active learning experience, preferably
one that embraces technology that has become the tools for their lives.
A successful 1 to 1 learning program matches how our 21st century students interact and
learn. The around to clock access to technology will help student acquire many skills they
will need to succeed in the decades to come. Students need to be well schooled in the
traditional curriculum but also need 21st-century skills to succeed. The world is
becoming a more diverse, dynamic place with technology blurring the borders and
bringing it closer than ever before. The new skill set includes collaborative and creative
skills that are unique to this generation, we need to prepare them. To educate a child without a rich technological environment that
mimics the real world is malpractice.
1:1 Goals
1. Increase engagement in the classroom as routinely measured by the Instructional Practices Inventory.
2. Foster 21st Century Skills in our students.
3. Give all students access to a rich technological environment.
4. Promote college and career readiness.
