I hated school. I didn't like to read. My grades were rarely better than a C. As an Air Force brat I started each school year in a different state and once even a different country. My memories of school are limited. I remember my 1st grade teacher blew her whistle most of the day to get our attention. My 6th grade teacher let us chose either the "sting" or the "hurt" for our hacks. I always selected the "hurt". My 8th grade humanities teacher regularly whacked our wrists with her ruler for misbehavior. I had to see the principal on numerous occasions, but I don't recall a single principal's name or face from my thirteen year career. I'm a product of public education in the 60's & 70's and I have no recollection of school ever being fun.
For the last fifteen years I've been the principal or assistant in six different schools in four different districts and one of my top goals in each has been to make school fun and learning meaningful. We're in the business of creating memories for kids. Why not create great memories! They deserve it.
How do you make school a fun place and create positive memories for kids?
Here's some ideas I've tried:
Be Silly & Wear Costumes and Hats
Smile & Laugh...Play!
How will you be remembered by your students?
How do you create positive memories for kids?
What do you do to make your school fun?
Isn't that always the way? Those who hate school become the best teachers and administrators...
Great post! Thanks!
