Thank goodness everything was recoverable. I use an external server to back up all my most important data, but it's so easy to forget to do that all-important upload.

I thought I'd point you to a post on my blog about backing up data. Like you, I know I should back up my files, but somehow I never get around to it. So I found a no-hassle solution.

The post is called "Why you should use Mozy too..." and you can find it here: http://tcmtechnologyblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/why-you-should-use-mozy-too.html

I once experienced a hard drive crash after I had left my laptop in the car one cold night. I didn't let it warm up enough - or something - and I got the BSOD upon startup. I, too, was lucky enough that my data was recovered. But, that's not the end of the story.

That day I sent out a tip to the entire staff where I work in which I encouraged THEM to quickly back up their data. I asked the rhetorical question, "Can you afford to lose your data?" Ten I ended with, "Do it now! I think I hear strange noises coming from your hard drive. :-) "

About 15 minutes later I received a PHONE call from one of the employees who quickly asked, "What KIND of noises do you hear coming from my hard drive?"

After I stopped laughing and I told her that it was just a joke, she added, "Well, I don't use the computer very often." Er... I had actually guessed that much. :-)
